There is something reassuringly robust about The Punch Bowl Inn.
Not just in the old-fashioned bar, where the Wainwright Gold is well kept and a huge leather
sofa sits before a blazing wood burner; or in the dining room, solid and comfortable,
with its old beams, well-trodden wooden floors and tables unadorned
with cloths; it’s in the menu, too, mainly British with a Gallic burr, that
makes full use of the magnificent local Lake District larder.

We’re here with Peter Gott, that great Cumbrian hero, and the man behind Sillfield Farm, who has invited me up to cook at the
Westmorland County Show; also chef Phil Vickery, who certainty knows
his alliums; and the force of nature that is Lorraine Stanton, something of a legend around these parts.

But first dinner, and a sublime twice-baked Mrs Kirkham’s cheese soufflé, the
texture as light as a sigh, the flavour profoundly,
lasciviously rich. Mrs Kirkham’s, now made by her son Graham, is one of
the world’s great cheeses, and this is a soufflé of quiet majesty.

A mushroom soup is equally splendid, managing to be both light and gutsy,
while Stornoway black pudding with bubble and squeak
and a deep-fried egg is pure Cumbrian comfort by way of Lewis.

There’s a fundamental generosity here, matched by assured technical
precision. Duck à l’orange sees a plump breast cooked rare, the skin crisp, the sauce just
the right side of bitter. It comes with a fat potato fondant and cabbage spiked with shards of smoked bacon.
I eat rump of lamb, four vast just-pink slices, drenched
in the stickiest, most gloriously intense of gravies; by its side, a tiny shepherd’s
pie, one bite of pure ovine brilliance.

Puddings are every bit as fine: a lemon tart, beautifully sharp,
with damson sorbet (this part of the Lake District is famed for its
damsons); along with a banana soufflé, this time the classic version but ethereal, served with vanilla ice cream and a pot of sticky-toffee sauce to pour deep into its molten centre.
This is good old-fashioned food, immaculately done, in the
sort of pub designed for lingering. It’s getting late now, and we’ve an early start.
But first, another bottle of wine. Dinners like this are too rare to be rushed.

Nothing signals the start of winter quite like the return of the Fair Isle
knit. Once considered ‘ugly’ knitwear we’d only pull out from
the back of our wardrobes as an alternative to a Christmas jumper (especially the red-nosed reindeer kind à
la Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones’s Diary) or for a winter sport holiday (specifically for après-ski), the Fair Isle
jumper has now become somewhat of a fashion statement.

The knit is named after the small, eponymous Shetland Island
in Scotland and uses a traditional knitting technique to create those distinctive patterns with multiple colours.
It was brought into vogue by an earlier Prince of Wales (later
Edward VIII) in the 1920s, and has remained a casual wardrobe staple for members of the Royal Family, including Kate Middleton, whose jumper
collection includes at least three different Fair Isle designs.

Former first lady Melania Trump said she was completely comfortable with posing nude during her modeling days. 

In her memoir Melania, which was released Tuesday, she recounts how
her nude photos were put on the cover of The New York
Post during the closing weeks of the 2016 presidential election. 

The tabloid used the ‘disgusting heaadline,’ as Melania described it, ‘Menage à Trump.’

‘My upbringing in Europe had fostered a different perspective on nudity,
a more open and accepting attitude,’ she wrote. ‘We

uncontroversial aspect of life.’ 

She noted how ‘attitudes toward the female body in the United States
were starkly different.’

These days Wintour is actively supporting former President Donald Trump’s Democratic rival, Vice President Kamala Harris.

Lady Gaga fans are begging the singer to do a global tour –
two years after her last tour, The Chromatica Ball.

The pop superstar, 38, is preparing to release her seventh album, with fans
hoping this will lead to a string of concerts. 

However, a Live Nation spokesperson confirmed: ‘There is no 2025 tour planned.’

The Sun reports that Lady Gaga will instead tour in 2026.

It comes as the hitmaker is set to release her new song Disease on Friday, as the first
single from her forthcoming seventh album.

the September release of her album Harlequin, which was inspired by

million in domestic box office revenue, according to Box Office Mojo.

Some fans have said that despite the film’s initial failure financially and with critics, it will be looked upon favorably years from now.

Lady Gaga has had some commercial success in recent months with her pairing with Bruno Mars
on Die With a Smile, which was released in August, landing
in the third spot on Billboard’s Hot 100.

In 2020, she put out the studio album Chromatica, which initially landed in the top spot upon its
debut and included the hit single Rain on Me, a collaboration with Ariana Grande.

Hamas’ leader Yahya Sinwar could have given an order to execute all the hostages who remain in Gaza if
he died, a top Israeli negotiator has claimed. 

Sinwar died on Wednesday after the IDF encountered him by chance, sending a drone to
kill the terror leader. 

Gershon Baskin, the Israeli negotiator who oversaw Sinwar’s 2011 release from
an Israeli prison, along with 1,026 Palestinian prisoners,
in exchange for the return of kidnapped soldier Gilad Shilat, said
that his death was a ‘moment of either opportunity or a moment
of doom.’

‘A moment of doom because there are rumours that Sinwar instructed
people holding hostages that, should he be killed, they should kill their
hostages,’ he told the Telegraph. 

At the time of Sinwar’s death, just over 100
hostages remained in Gaza, with 60 thought to still be
alive. 

Those who remain alive are at risk of never being returned to their
families, according Haaretz, which reported on Sunday that top US officials, including
Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, have assessed there is a slim chance of a deal
being brokered, given the tensions between Israel and Hamas.

A senior Israeli official told the newspaper on Sunday, several days after Sinwar’s passing: ‘There are
currently no serious cease-fire talks, and Blinken is fully
aware of this.’

They added: ‘It’s unclear how Sinwar’s death will impact any potential negotiations,
if they even exist at this stage.’

While Baskin told the Telegraph that it wasn’t possible to
confirm whether Sinwar had a kill order on the hostages, he
said the rumours ought to be taken seriously, given how little Hamas appears
to care for them. 

He cited the horrific killing of six hostages in tunnels under Rafah in late August. 

Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari said the six were ‘cruelly murdered by Hamas just a short
time before we got to them.’

The six dead hostages were identified as Eden Yerushalmi, 24, Carmel
Gat, 39, Almog Sarusi, 26, Alex Lubnov, 26, Ori Danino, 25, and Hersh Goldberg-Polin, 23.  

Five of those who were recovered had been attending the Nova music festival when Hamas terrorists began slaughtering festivalgoers, while taking others hostage.

Gat was at her family kibbutz when she was captured.

He said the return of the hostages depended entirely on whether Israel is able
to make a deal with Hamas. 

‘It’s a moment of opportunity where Israel should be

as well as a lot of money.

‘In order to encourage them to do that, Israel should
also be reaching out to Egypt and Qatar and tell them to renew the negotiations quickly, not on the deal that’s been negotiated without success for almost four months, but on a deal that would bring the hostages home quicker and would obviously require Israel to end the war.’

He said a deal would likely mean the release of Palestinian prisoners, a controversial
point for many Israelis who believe that their release would simply lead to another October 7-style
attack in the future.

LONDON, Sept 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris
International (PMI) on Thursday signalled a slower
than anticipated U.S. roll out of its IQOS heated tobacco device,
a choice analysts said was positive for its competitors in the
short term.

The New York-listed Marlboro maker also said it aims for more than two thirds of its net revenues to
come from „smoke-free” products by 2030, up from 50% in 2025,
as it tries to transform its image from a cigarette purveyor to
a driver of the shift to healthier alternatives.

Investors have been closely watching IQOS’ entry into the U.S., the world’s largest
market for nicotine products, and had been expecting it from May 2024 next year.
Reuters reported on Wednesday that PMI is hiring lobbyists across a host of key
U.S. states ahead of the launch.

Chief Executive Jacek Olczak said IQOS would launch in four cities in two unnamed U.S.
states from 2024, but a national launch would only come
after PMI receives approval to sell the latest version, known as IQOS ILUMA.

The company was planning to apply for approval in October
and expected it from 2025, he continued.

„We need to warm up the tyres,” he said of the initial launch, which would
help PMI fine tune its approach.

A national roll-out of ILUMA would follow but in phases,
he continued, adding launching in 10 states in the first year would make sense.

Meaningful traction for PMI’s heated tobacco products in the U.S.
„now looks delayed until ILUMA,” Owen Bennett, equity
analyst at Jefferies, said in a note, adding this was a positive for PMI’s rivals.

Olczak also signalled that PMI’s push into non-nicotine products was no longer a priority.

It recently scrapped an ambition for $1 billion in net revenues to come from sales of such products
by 2025.

Instead, PMI will focus its resources on IQOS and nicotine pouch brand
ZYN, Olczak said, adding it had been too optimistic around
acceptance of big tobacco companies operating outside of nicotine.

PMI also announced updated medium-term targets including for revenue and earnings
per share, and ambitious volume targets for IQOS and ZYN.

ZYN and other oral nicotine products in the U.S.

would help drive an expected $2 billion in revenues there in 2024,
even before IQOS ILUMA, executives said.

SHANGHAI, Dec 6 (Reuters) – The yuan was little changed on Friday against the
dollar, but is headed for its tenth straight weekly loss amid concerns
that new tariff threatened by President-elect Donald Trump
will heighten strains on the struggling Chinese economy.

Analysts expect the dollar to remain firm as Trump’s policies are expected
to drive up U.S. inflation, but they believe Beijing will prevent the yuan from
falling too much. „We anticipate some depreciation pressure in an expected strong dollar environment,” Lynn Song, Greater China chief economist at ING, said in a note.

However, „we don’t expect an intentional large-scale depreciation and think the yuan will remain a low-volatility currency vis-à-vis most other Asian currencies.” The yuan was changing hands
at 7.2549 per dollar around midday, little moved from the
previous close.
Although the currency has rebounded from a one-year low of 7.2996 hit on Tuesday, it is poised to register its longest weekly losing streak since 2018.
The dollar index fell to one-week low overnight and „the USD’s consolidation should unwind the upside pressure building” in the yuan, aided by ongoing attempts by China’s central bank to
restrain its decline, said Alvin Tan, strategist at RBC Capital Markets.

Recent data has painted a mixed picture of China’s economic recovery, with
manufacturing activities improving, but property sales in many
Chinese cities remaining weak. China’s „economic landscape is unarguably dull, and the absence of excitement is perhaps the most salient feature,”
said John Browning, managing director of BANDS Financial.

He doesn’t expect huge stimulus to be announced during next week’s Central Economic
Work Conference, as „Beijing’s largesse will be reserved until after Trump is restored to the White House and the trade war formally begins.” Top policymakers will gather at
the conference to agree on major economic goals for next year.

But the target for 2025 growth, one of the most closely-watched indicators
globally for clues of Beijing’s near-term policy intentions,
likely will not be officially announced until an annual parliament
meeting in March. During Trump’s first term as president,
the yuan weakened about 5% against the dollar after the initial round of U.S.

tariffs on Chinese goods in 2018, and fell another 1.5% a year later when trade tensions escalated.
Growth worries and expectations of further monetary easing by Beijing pushed China’s 10-year
treasury yields below 2% to record lows this week, worsening the yield disadvantage against the U.S.,
and exerting downward pressure on the yuan. ING’s Song expects the onshore yuan to move within a
band between 7.00-7.40 per dollar, but could fall further
to 7.50 „if tariffs come in earlier or more aggressive than our forecasts.” LEVELS AT

Venice, a city long associated with masks and masquerades, was
the perfect place to unveil Joker five years ago; and last month, at the venerable film festival there, it was followed by the sequel, Joker: Folie À Deux.

The director is again Todd Phillips, with Joaquin Phoenix once more in the title role, this time joined by Lady Gaga as what I suppose we
must call the love interest, although that would undervalue her wonderful performance.

We’ve known since A Star Is Born in 2018 that she can act, but she really is terrific in a bad-girl role.
They’d have loved her at St Trinian’s.

This film is audaciously different in style from the original, not as electrifying,
but bold and brilliant all the same.

Arthur is now behind bars, waiting to see whether he will be judged sane enough to stand trial for murder, and in the meantime enjoying his celebrity status with
fellow prisoners and even the warders, one of whom, a sadistic Irishman played by
Brendan Gleeson, feeds him cigarettes in return for jokes.

it is the former; Lee just as urgently wants him to identify

For me, Joker was a near-masterpiece, and while this sequel doesn’t scale those heady heights, it is still a gripping film about mental illness; not quite comparable with all-time greats such as Psycho
(1960) and One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (1975), but not too
far off.

– Joker’s Gotham, of course, is a lightly fictionalised version of New York City.
The real thing is the backdrop to A Different Man, another absorbing
story, splendidly written and directed by Aaron Schimberg, about an urban loner struggling with life.

In the case of the troubled, self-conscious Edward (Sebastian Stan), an aspiring actor, that’s apparently because he has a disfiguring craniofacial condition.
Instructional corporate videos seem to be about as far as he
can get in the acting world.

There are obvious echoes of The Elephant Man (1980), and for
that matter of recent release The Substance, in which Demi Moore’s character, a former movie star ‘disfigured’ by a few wrinkles,
finds a way of transforming into her own younger self.

Here, Edward is told by a doctor that ‘an alternative path has presented
itself’. In other words, medical science has found a way to reverse his condition, turning him into a perfectly attractive middle-aged man.

But Schimberg’s point, made with great satirical swagger, is that Edward, despite his
radical change in appearance, is still the same person underneath that he always was.

In his former condition he was befriended by his pretty, charismatic
neighbour, Ingrid (Renate Reinsve), a playwright. Now he is able to fall into bed with her, and to star in a play
she has written about their relationship, little though she knows of his real identity.

I was even reminded of Tootsie (1982) and Mrs Doubtfire (1993) as Edward’s new persona
fundamentally fails to alter who he actually
is. This is illuminated by the arrival of Oswald,
an Englishman with the same condition Edward once had, but popular, witty, confident, and gloriously played by Adam Pearson (who really does
suffer from a disfiguring condition called neurofibromatosis).

Pearson is probably best-known for his debut film, Jonathan Glazer’s brilliant Under The Skin (2013).

Which is apt, because this picture, too, is about what’s
under the skin.

of her generation, plays Rita, an East End mum whose son George (Elliott Heffernan) goes missing.
It sounds intriguing even without the casting of The
Jam’s former front man Paul Weller — in his feature film debut — as Rita’s
father.

I’m also very much looking forward to another world premiere,
Joy, the story of the three brilliant British medical pioneers whose work on IVF
led to the world’s first ‘test-tube’ baby, Louise Brown,
in 1978.

It is directed by Ben Taylor, best-known for his TV work
on shows such as Sex Education and Catastrophe, and

I have heard great things about Conclave, the adaptation of Robert Harris’s novel
starring Ralph Fiennes and Stanley Tucci. A couple of new documentaries catch the eye, too.
One of them is made by actress Sadie Frost, whose directing debut was a film about Mary Quant.
This time she turns to another fashion icon of
the 1960s, with a feature called Twiggy.

And Elton John: Never Too Late promises a ‘uniquely intimate’ look at
the star’s life and career. It’s been made by his long-time partner David Furnish, so… we’ll see.

The Food and Drug Administration’s top tobacco scientist has accepted a job at
tobacco giant Philip Morris International, just weeks after he signed
off on the company’s latest vape product. 

Matt Holman, chief of the office of science in the agency’s Center
for Tobacco Products (CTP), announced his departure from the FDA on Tuesday, effective immediately, after
having served at the agency for more than 20 years. 

His departure adds to ongoing trouble within the FDA’s tobacco control division, which is
currently under review by agency commissioner Robert Califf. 

It also follows the division’s loss of Mitch Zeller, who retired in April after serving
as CTP director for nearly a decade. Brian King, who announced
Holman’s resignation in an internal memo, was appointed director earlier this month.

Changes to CTP’s organizational structure come amid
FDA efforts to regulate the vaping market and just weeks after the agency temporarily reversed its June decision to ban Juul e-cigarettes from being sold in stores. 

Philip Morris, although most known for its production of Marlboro cigarettes, is also a producer of e-cigarettes, heated tobacco
and oral nicotine products.

At CTP, Holman played a key role in e-cigarette approvals, including IQOS, a ‘heat-not-burn’
tobacco device produced by Philip Morris International (PMI).

Although IQOS isn’t currently sold in the US due to patent issues,
it could possibly face new FDA reviews if those issues were to be
resolved.

The product is currently sold in Korea, Japan and other countries, but the firm
hopes to resume sales in the US next year. 

Holman told The New York Times on Wednesday that his role at PMI was ‘broadly defined’ but involved working on tobacco harm-reduction efforts, noting he was drawn to the
agency because of its goal to push smokers from using cigarettes to noncombustible and less harmful products.

‘They are taking the actions that I think would align with such a goal,’ Holman said.
‘And that’s what really drew my attention to PMI.

I’m going there not to help them sell more cigarettes, but the
opposite.’ 

The biochemist said he would also provide input on regulatory submissions. 

A PMI spokesperson, in a statement to DailyMail.com on Thursday, declined to give specifics about Holman’s role at the firm but said ‘he will abide by
all applicable post-government employment restrictions.’

‘These restrictions prohibit Dr. Holman from appearing before or communicating with the FDA
on behalf of PMI regarding any matter for a period of one year.

‘In addition, Dr. Holman is prohibited for a period of two years from appearing before or communicating with
the FDA on behalf of PMI regarding any matter that
was pending under his official responsibility during
his last year of government service.

‘Finally, Dr. Holman is permanently prohibited from appearing before
or communicating with the FDA on behalf of PMI regarding any particular
matter in which he was personally and substantially involved during the
entirety of his government service.’

Holman’s departure comes just weeks after the federal regulator
temporarily reversed its June decision to ban Juul e-cigarettes from being sold in stores.

Further details about his appointment will be disclosed at
a later date, but the spokesperson reiterated the company is ‘looking forward’ to Holman joining their team ‘as we continue to pursue a
smoke-free future.’

Holman was earning more than $230,000 annually while working at CTP, according to 2020 income reports reviewed by
FederalPay.org.

CTP director King’s Tuesday memo – which was made public by
Stat News Correspondent Nicholas Florko – revealed Holman had been on leave prior to his resignation.

King said the former chief ‘recused himself, consistent with agency ethics policies, from all CTP/FDA work while exploring career opportunities outside of government.’

He also applauded Holman for helping CTP through a ‘critical time,’ which included ‘including preparing for and overseeing review for the bolus
of premarket tobacco product applications.’

He said that although he and Holman ‘didn’t have an opportunity to work together,’
he was ‘grateful’ for his contributions
to the agency and ‘wishes him well in his next chapter.’

It is unclear what Zeller made as CTP director, as his income documents have been redacted.
However, Glassdoor reports the average FDA division direct salary
is $200,891. Based on Holman’s salary, DailyMail.com analysts speculate Zeller was earning
over $230,000 annually.

His departure was announced by CTP Director Brian King in a memo on Tuesday, which
has since been made public by Stat News Correspondent Nicholas Florko

Critics argue Holman’s recent career change is concerning due to the ‘revolving door’
between federal officials and corporations they regulate.

However, federal rules governing career changes do not
prohibit an official who oversees regulatory matters
from leaving the agency and then joining corporations with products under review. 

Rules do restrict Holman – or any other former FDA employee – from appearing before the agency about issues he ‘participated personally and substantially during government
service.’ 

‘This is legal. That’s the bottom line,’ Dr. Michael Carome, director of the Public Citizen health research
group, told the Times. ‘It’s this type of revolving door move that really undermines
public confidence in the agency.’ 

Critics argue Holman’s career change is concerning
due to the ‘revolving door’ between federal officials and

Those skeptical of the move are also questioning the recent approval of the Philip Morris
smokeless tobacco product which is an electronic device that, unlike e-cigarettes,
contains tobacco.

Dr. Stanton Glantz, a retired professor of medicine, argued
the agency’s approval of IQOS ‘disregarded valid scientific evidence and misapplied the public health standard mandated by law.’

He claims Holman ignored a major study showing that e-cigarette use was not associated with reduced smoking rates and that approving vapes is not combating the problem of dual-use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes.

‘He’s the one who signed off on these approvals,’ he said.
‘They deal with all of these issues by ignoring it, by relying on out-of-date studies.’

Earlier this month, the FDA temporarily restored the sale of Juul e-cigarettes
after reviewing the company’s appeal of a decision to pull the
products from the market.

The FDA chose to reject the company’s application to remain on store shelves in late June as part of a larger crackdown on teen smoking and
the tobacco industry overall.

While many other major e-cigarette manufacturers were allowed to remain on shelves, Juul was instead rejected.
The San Francisco, California, company appealed the
decision.

On July 5, America’s top regulator agency cited ‘scientific issues’ as a reason to stay the ban and allow the products to temporarily return. 

‘This administrative stay temporarily suspends the marketing denial order
during the additional review but does not rescind it,’ the agency
wrote in a tweet.

‘All electronic nicotine delivery systems, or ENDS products,
including those made by JUUL, are required by law
to have FDA authorization to be legally marketed. The stay and the agency’s review does not constitute authorization to market, sell, or ship JUUL
products.’ 

Juul rocketed to popularity in the U.S. in the 2010s, as its fruit flavored nicotine products became trendy among younger smokers – leading to the company also
shouldering blame for increases in teen smoking.

To limit rises in teen smoking, the FDA banned fruit flavored e-cigarette devices,
and forced each company to apply individually to allow their products to
remain on shelves. Juul was expected to have its application approved.

Juul has branded its products as devices that can help those
addicted to nicotine slowly ween themselves off safely – as vape devices do not have many of the same downsides as smoking tobacco cigarettes
do.

Instead, though, the fruity and mint flavors in many of
its devices have led to many children and teens picking up
smoking – when they likely would not have otherwise.

This has placed Juul, and the e-cigarette market in general, in the
FDA’s crosshairs in recent years.
